Er hat das gemalt self-portrait im winter von 1887-1888 als er fast mit seinem bruder theo in paris lebte 2 jahre . Er nutzte die maltechnik pointillismus , jedoch , auf seine eigene weise . pointillismus ist eine maltechnik, die van gogh im studio von fernand cormon gelernt hat . mit strichen schuf van gogh eine art heiligenschein um seinen kopf . Diese dynamische arbeitsweise war neu in der kunst des malens und dieses porträt ist ein großartiges beispiel dafür und war auch ein anfang für viele weitere auf diese weise gemalte stücke .
